Adlai Stevenson was his Democratic opponent in both elections, who he defeated in a landslide victory in both instances. Eisenhower was widely popular for his leadership as a general in World War II, making him easily electable. He was often referred to by his nickname, “Ike,” with Nixon similarly being referred to as “Dick.”
